2024 SRATE Proposal Theme and Strands

Theme - Cresting the Summit: Empowering Educators for Excellence

SRATE, along with its parent organization ATE, have a long history of supporting education and teacher education of all types and in all settings. The information below is provided to assist you with selecting the appropriate strand for your presentation. These strands are applicable to classroom teachers; teacher educators; professional development personnel; pre-service teachers; and school, district, and higher education administrators.

Strands: 

A. Exploring Mentoring and “Growing Your Own”: This strand is designed for P-16 educators who are committed to building and strengthening the teacher workforce and supporting pre-service, new, and veteran teachers. Topics can include but are not limited to:
  • Teacher retention and shortage issues
  • Collaborative pathways to teaching, including alternative certification, apprenticeships, and other certification options
  • PD and other ideas for teacher development, retention, support, and self-care
  • Coaching, mentoring, and leadership within schools and districts
  • College and university roles in recruitment and retention
B. Science and Technology for a Sustainable World: This strand is designed for P-16 educators who implement – or aspire to implement – strategies and programs to enhance STEAM curricula, encourage P-16 students to explore STEAM-related careers, and promote a mindset of sustainability. Topics can include but are not limited to:
  • Technology-inspired coaching and teaching
  • Innovative and effective instruction in STEAM content in the P-16 classroom
  • Incorporating technology into all subject areas to enhance the learning environment
  • Increasing access to STEAM content for students in low-SES schools and communities
  • Ensuring STEAM content is adaptable for ESE and ELL populations
  • STEAM-related grants and grant writing
C. Increasing Diversity Through Access and Inclusivity: This strand is designed for P-16 educators who are pursuing effective recruitment of a more diverse teaching population and/or using instructional methods that engage a diverse student population and community. Topics can include but are not limited to:
  • Examples of including all stakeholders in program or strategy development
  • Innovative practices in preparing and retaining a diverse teaching population
  • Community/school partnerships
  • Inclusive and interdisciplinary curriculum and instruction
  • Advocacy for diverse or underrepresented populations
  • Equitable instructional practices focused on reaching diverse populations of learners
D. Education Policy and Advocacy in Unprecedented Times: This strand is designed for P-16 educators who are working through curriculum changes, book bans, challenges from parents and other stakeholders, and legislative mandates. What’s working? What support from school and district administrators are helping? What are the most effective ways to support new teachers, career changers, and anyone who is trying to make a difference? Topics can include but are not limited to:
  • Lessons learned
  • The impact on personal connections: teacher-to-teacher, teacher-to-student, student-to-student
  • Mental health issues for students, families, and educators
  • COVID “leftovers” – Students who have not recovered from the mental/emotional challenge
  • AI in the Classroom:  The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
E. Engaging All Learners: This strand is designed for educators who implement innovative instructional strategies to engage students in an active, authentic, and hands-on learning environment and those who utilize effective classroom management strategies to foster a positive connection with students, their caregivers, and the community. Topics can include but are not limited to:
  • Innovative classroom management strategies that foster student academic performance
  • Examples of leading or advocating for the strengthening of teacher preparation and/or the instructional practices of classroom teachers
  • Strategies that are essential to building a positive organizational culture that lead to student achievement (school-based, district-wide, or college/university-based)
  • Understanding and implementing changes to standards
  • Examples of UDL (universal design for learning) and differentiation
  • Cross-collaboration
  • Interdisciplinary preparation
F. Research and Practice for Innovation: This strand is designed for P-16 educators who make contributions to the profession by conducting relevant research and/or presenting professional development that is focused on current issues pertinent to the field of education. Topics can include but are not limited to:
  • The Science of Reading
  • Innovative practices in teacher preparation and professional development
  • Teacher Action Research: Enhancing the P-16 classroom
  • Best practices in the P-16 classroom: What’s working in the field
